A New Favorite Book!

It's no secret I've been busy this year. So busy in fact that by the time I have everything done for my day job, do one thing for National Board certification, and think about editing my new book, there's no more time left in the day! That doesn't leave a whole lot of time for reading, but recently I treated myself to a book that had caught my eye in the goody room at RWA’s National Conference this past July.

I knew I just had to tell you about it. I give you...

Here'‘s what it’s about.

Nestled in the mountain shadows of Alabama lies the little town of Wicklow. It is here that Anna Kate has returned to bury her beloved Granny Zee, owner of the Blackbird Café.

It was supposed to be a quick trip to close the café and settle her grandmother’s estate, but despite her best intentions to avoid forming ties or even getting to know her father’s side of the family, Anna Kate finds herself inexplicably drawn to the quirky Southern town her mother ran away from so many years ago, and the mysterious blackbird pie everybody can’t stop talking about.

As the truth about her past slowly becomes clear, Anna Kate will need to decide if this lone blackbird will finally be able to take her broken wings and fly.

Heather Webber's work pulled me in immediately and ticked all my boxes.

Small southern town? Check.

Intelligent young women? Check.

Two happily ever afters? Check.

Baking? Check.

Gardening? Check.

Cats? Check.

A rugged mountain man with a military background? Check.

A little bit of magic? Check.

Seriously, I can't recommend this book enough. I love to read what I write, and if you liked The Secret About Time, you're going to be for a real treat at the Blackbird Cafe. I’ve been looking for years for another small town romance with magical realism. I finally have found it and couldn’t love it anymore.

Aside from being a beautiful, compelling story, I learned something about myself through a character named Natalie. Imagine my surprise, when with the turn of a page, I saw a nightmare from my past spelled out. Heather's beautiful and accurate painting of Natalie's emotions matched my own and hit me right in the heart, forcing me to see a version of myself I hadn't been able to until now. It brought up a lot of emotions I had shoved into a box and tucked away deep in my psyche. It's probably not a surprise to anyone I've been having a hard time fitting those feelings back into the box they came out of. The good news? Natalie has a happy ending after she unpacks her emotions and starts to move forward. There's a lesson in there somewhere for me.

If you love small towns with a little magical realism as I do, you're going to adore this book. Know anything similar? Please drop me a comment below! I'm always on the hunt for a little magical realism.

Wishing you a sweet and magical day,

Kathryn
